Ability: No superhuman abilities of any kind. Helena is a highly trained fighter and martial artist, however. She's also pretty damn handy with a crossbow. Huntress said, as she threw a swing at the large thug coming straight at her, "Why is it so hard to get any goddamned food around this city anymore!" Her attacker doesn't say anything. Rather, he just runs at heroine, arms outreached to grab at her waist. "Please," she said, launching into a somersault to land a kick on his forehead, "That really the best you got?" He doesn't go down right away. Rather, the stupid, big lumbering man just grabs at his forehead, and he contiuned to charge her again. Ugh. Why couldn't mindless thugs just accept the fact that they'd been defeated, and just cry "uncle"? Because then, that would be easy and crime would cease to exist. Not that that would be an extremely horrible thing or something. In fact, it would be a nice change of plans for Helena. she could get around to grading those essays on Wuthering Heights, work on her lesson plan for next week, relax with a cup of steaming hot tea, and take a long, much-deserved bubble bat. Focus Helena. You know there's a zero percent chance in hell of something like that happening in Gotham City. The crossbow is out and she fired almost what looked like a small dart at her attacker's left shoulder. "Night-night Mister Ugly Thug," Huntress said with a smirk as the serum in the arrow took hold and the thug crashed to the ground with a huge THUD. Huntress sighed, pulling out her comm-link and pressing the button that would give the GCPD the location of the thug. Job/Title in Fandom: High School teacher/vigilante Alignment: Good Team: Birds of Prey Brief History: Maria Panessa Bertinelli, wife of Franco Bertinelli of the Mafia family in Gotham City, was the subject of frequent beatings from her husband, though he was sure never to beat her face. Maria decided to have an affair with a man named Santo Cassamento. As a result, Maria became pregnant, with her husband knowing it was not his own child and still beat Maria. Maria gave birth to a girl whom she named Helena Rosa. For eight years, Helena grew up in a mafia household, never suspecting the criminal dealings that took place there. When Helena was eight years old, a man barged in to the Bertinelli household during dinner and shot Franco, Maria and Pino Bertinelli, sparing Helena. The hit came from Mandragora who wished for no vendettas against him. Helena's biological father passed the order along with a modification that "the sister" be spared. Santo was referring to Maria. But the gunman confused Maria with Helena and so Helena was spared, though she was not supposed to be. Helena was placed under the care of her Uncle Tomasso's nephew, Salvatore Asaro. She was taken back to the old country, Sicily, where she would be kept safe and where the family was still strong. When arriving, she was terrified. Helena remained there for a number of years. Watching her cousin and uncle train and practice with weapons and hand-to-hand combat. However, the nightmares stayed with her. One night, her cousin showed her that only she could stop the nightmare by putting an end to those who murdered her family: blood cries for blood. When taken into the barn, she asked her cousin to teach her how, picking up a crossbow on the wall. She trained until the age of fifteen when she was sent to a boarding school in Switzerland to protect her from the Italian authorities who were cracking down on the Mafia. When reading and seeing what was happening, she realized that everything she had been told was a lie about the Mafia. She realized that the Mafia was a force of corruption and evil and for a hundred years, it had been headed by her own family in Gotham City. At age sixteen, she finally returned to Gotham City to spend Christmas with her uncle. However, she hated everyone there. During the party, Helena witnessed her family finally frightened of something. Batman had crashed the party and fought with them. Helena realized that she could fight them too. Helena returned to Switzerland for school where she plotted her vengeance. She went to her old house in Sicily (which had since been abandoned as a result of her uncle and cousin being arrested), and took a crossbow and a number of items for her crusade. Enrolling at the university in Palermo, she learned all about the Mafia. She constructed her costume and a number of weapons. She thought herself as a nun, totally devoted to her quest. On her twenty-first birthday, Helena found out through her cousin Sal that Mandragora and his men were indeed the ones responsible for her families' deaths. Helena fashioned a costume and went after Stefano at a fancy party, and killed him in his study. After then, she made her choice to go back to her hometown of Gotham, where she would weed out the mafia...including the love of her life, Tony Angelo, whom she had known since kindergarten. Upon returning to Gotham, she earned the attention of Batman, who did not approve of her as he thought her to be both dangerous and violent. She also had a brief affair with Nightwing went they teamed-up to stop a corrupt mafia cop. She even donned the mantle of Batgirl for a brief time during when Gotham was a "No Man's Land", though she would also work under Huntress as well. Still not impressed by her violent tendencies and harsh attitude, Batman eventually ordered that she give up the Batgirl mantle, before handing it over to Cassandra Cain. Helena continued to be Huntress in No Man's Land, allying herself with a renegade police officer to the point where she assisted in capturing Nightwing and Oracle (though in the end, she helped them escape). On Christmas Eve, the Joker attacked her. Joker shot the Huntress five times that night. She survived the encounter and fully recovered, earning Batman's respect. To curb Helena's violent attitude, Batman nominated her for a position in the Justice League. However, Batman revoked her membership when she was about to kill Prometheus. After a series of murders which seemingly pointed to her as the killer, Huntress became wanted by Batman and Nightwing. Fortunately for her, she tumbled into the bay where she was picked up and rescued by the Question. She was taken to Canada where she was trained by the Question's sensei for three months. The two then traveled back to Gotham where she shared the story of her becoming the Huntress. The time Question and Huntress spent together sparked a relationship. However, when Huntress discovered who had been framing her, she discovered more then she bargained for. She discovered her true father as being Santo Cassamento and he was responsible for the death of her family. As a result, Helena asked a favor of her Uncle Tomasso. Santo was lured to the docks and was killed by Tomasso's men. The Question did not approve of what Helena had asked, and inquired when the killing would stop. He left her as she threw her golden cross into the water. Eventually, Huntress joined Oracle and the Birds of Prey. At first, Oracle only had Helena on the team strictly to "keep an eye on her", as she knew all about the other woman's affair with Nightwing. Huntress did form a close friendship with Black Canary and Lady Blackhawk, as she felt that she could relate to them somehow. Eventually, Huntress and Oracle were able to put aside their differences, and Oracle gave Huntress the position of field leader when Black Canary left the team to pursue her marriage with Green Arrow. List of Abilities/Powers: Helena is skilled in many different forms of martial arts, including tai chi, whing chun, and hapkido. Helena is also skilled in many weapons, including the bo staff, throwing knives, and the crossbow (which is her weapon of choice). Helena is also fluent in Italian, has an acute knowledge of how the mob works, and is an expert tracker. In fact, her hate, rage, and the feeling of vengeance are what fuel her. While Helena follows the strict hero-code of "no killing" (or she tries to, anyway), she doesn't take any shit from those that commit crimes and will resort to any methods that she sees fit to get answers. Because of this, many of her colleagues regard her as a loose canon, and see her as a time-bomb waiting to explode. Helena does however, know her limits, although she harbors a deep fear that one day, she'll crack under the strain and forget all limits...which she has come close to doing before. Helena is a very closed-off person, with very few close friends. Even the few friends that she has often say that she is a mystery to them, and feel as if they don't truly know her. Her respect is very hard to earn, and once you have earned it, it doesn't always mean that you have earned her friendship...or her trust. To her students, Helena is a very strict, yet fair teacher.
